No More Troops to Afghanistan! No More War!
In Burlington, Vermont over 100 people gathered on Saturday December, 12 to say "No more war in Afghanistan" and to denounce Barack Obama's 30,000 person troop surge to Afghanistan. The rally took place one day after 350 members of the Vermont National Guard departed for training before deployment to Afghanistan early next year. Vermont is sending more than 1,500 National Guards people to Afghanistan, this is the largest deployment of Vermont's National Guard since World War II. As of July 2009, the Vermont National Guard had a total of 2,660 people enlisted, this leaves Vermont with just over 1,000 guards to protect the state in the event of an emergency. Dozens of similar demonstrations took place across the country on Saturday. Thousands of people spoke out against the troop surge and the escalating war in Afghanistan. Local author and activist, Ben Dangl, attended the rally. "This December 12th protest in Burlington, VT coincided with protests around the nation denouncing Obama's troop escalation in Afghanistan, and should signal the re-emergence of a much-needed anti-war movement. From Afghanistan to Honduras and beyond, Obama's foreign policy is a devastating continuation of US imperialism and needs to be stopped.” Despite the freezing cold temperature and frigid winds the crowd stayed warm singing chants, "Same lies, same plan, troops out of Afghanistan". The event was organized by local activist Jonathan Leavitt. "Our political leaders have failed us, allowing more Vermont National Guard to be shipped into the meatgrinder that is Afghanistan than remain here in Vermont, leaving us dangerously vulnerable to disasters. Until Vermonters organize and rise up in mass civil disobedience, we are allowing ourselves to be implicated in an illegal and immoral occupation, which in turn leaves us vulnerable to the common blizzard" Speaking to the crowd Leavitt encourages that "Hopefully starting today...a righteous flame of indignation can rise in the anti-war movement to say no more, not another dollar, not another dayfor this illegal and immoral war!"Published 2 months ago

Strolling of the Heifers parade highlights
Saturday, June 6 was the seventh year for the Strolling of the Heifers parade in Brattleboro. Rated as one of the top 10 summer events in Vermont by the state chamber of commerce, this event, which runs from Friday through Sunday, is a gathering of farm animals, farm equipment, farmers, food producers, schools, children, arts groups, musicians and performers, to celebrate and showcase Vermont agriculture. I saw the parade, which was an hour of non-stop music, cute cows and kids, floats, dragons and dancers. It was one of the most creative and entertaining parades I have seen in Vermont, and highly recommended for anyone to see it.Published 8 months ago

Welcome to Reality Intro
This is an intro I cut together back in the mid 90s for a cult favorite public access TV show I co-produced in Burlington, Vermont called "Welcome to Reality." WTR was hosted by Dan Zucker. The show was part hoax, part irate rant, part improvised theater, part social experiment and part deranged psychotic break. This was edited using a "linear" tape-to-tape edit suite on 3/4" U-Matic tape in 1996 or 1997. Apologies to Thomas Dolby. twelve
twelve was originally, a 12 panel comic story. the story was simply 12 seperate moments- unconnected, but telling a bigger picture- like a simultaneous moment. Bringing this comic to a temporal based medium came from a desire to experiment with what i saw as a possible bridge between flat 2d sequential arts and motion mediums that essentially record real-life- like video/film. i like the jarring collision of the two- flat/moving, b&w/color- My choices for the video are based sometimes on the subject matter of the panels, but sometimes not. I used unused video i had shot for previous projects and found footage culled from internet. in the end, i make these pieces like i would approach a piece of fine art- without specific objectives - just letting creativity take its course.Published 1 year ago

heterogene
heterogeneous in picture, concept and sound. by flameape This, like a number of really short vids I've made, is more like a video sketch than anything. I just played around with randomly selected photos and some of my sketches and doodles- trying to let their combination come to me subconsciously. finally, the music i chose was also a song made of little pieces. for me, this piece is a meditation on how disconnected and "random" (overused word-arg) images, things, ideas come together and make our world on any given day, moment. Also- I'm always interested in how images can have their own narrative- non sequiturs, etc.; there can be a narrative experience even with seemingly disparate elements - once the artist chooses to force them together. The viewer makes the narrative- like a video Rorschach test. Anyway- best not to think- just watch and come up with your own idea- not mine. ;)Published 1 year ago

Amadis - Leatherhouse
Directed by Jeff HowlettBand Bio: Much like the valiant knights that defended the Kingdom of Gaul against the Roman Empire, Amadis plays the kind of metal that you can really crank in your IRoc. They don't care about your haircut or your piercings or your sad little feelings. They just show up and rock because they're already wearing leather pants and somebody needs to pay the price. Metal hasn't felt so good in a long, long time.Published 2 years ago

Stuck in Vermont 34: Circus Smirkus
7/1/07: This summer is the 20th anniversary of Circus Smirkus. It all began in the tiny Vermont town of Greensboro when founder Rob Mermin caught the circus bug. What began as a summer break for farm kids has turned into an international extravaganza with contortionists from Mongolia, a hula hooper from Minnesota, and a tightrope walker from Colombia. The kids work hard and when they are not performing, they are behind the scenes making sure everything is going smoothly. During the 3 week rehearsal period they put the show together, develop heightened levels of trust and become a tight knit family. The circus has become an established art form over the past 20 years and Circus Smirkus is a big part of this movement. Their 7 week, 71 show New England tour begins now and runs through August.
